The best durable pen for everyday carry, and what makes a pen last
Written by the team at Everyman, who make the Grafton. We tell you what makes a pen last, and where ours falls short.
The short answer
A durable pen comes down to three things: a metal body, a clip that can't snap off, and a refill you can always replace. The Super Matte Grafton Pen, at $64, has all three.
- Best overall: Super Matte Grafton Pen ($64). Machined 6061-T6 aluminum, clip bolted on with two hex screws, takes Pilot G2.
- Best value: The Original Grafton Pen ($54). Same body and specs, standard anodized finish.
- Best for small pockets: The Grafton Mini Pen ($54). 125mm and 0.8 oz, with a click.
- Best twist action: The Grafton Mini Twist Pen ($54). 130mm and 1 oz, deploys with a twist.

The pens, one by one
Super Matte Grafton Pen
Machined from 6061-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum and finished in Super Matte, a velvety, non-reflective surface over a deep machined groove grip. The clip is bolted on with two hex-head screws, not snapped on or molded in, so it holds a shirt pocket, a notebook spine or a uniform chest pocket. It takes Pilot G2, Parker, Fisher Space Pen and Monteverde refills, so you are never locked into one ink.
Who it's for: the man who has gone through a drawer of pens and wants one that stays.
What owners say, in their words:
"As a law enforcement officer, I rely on my gear to be tough, reliable, and always ready. It's not just a writing instrument; it's an extension of my daily toolkit."Joe D.
"This pen has quickly become an indispensable part of my daily carry. It's robust enough for the demands of military work, incredibly reliable, and a pleasure to use."Todd K.
"I love everything about these pens. The color is great, the quality of the instruments is great and the customer service is, you guessed it, great. I write with one of my 5 Graftons everyday."Tim H.
Where it falls short: $64 is real money for a pen, and if you lose pens often a cheaper one makes more sense. At 0.9 oz you will feel it in your hand; owners call it balance, but it is not a featherweight. And the water-based Metal Gel it ships with doesn't like a year in a dry drawer; if you fly often or live somewhere arid, swap in a 1.0mm Ballpoint.
The Original Grafton Pen
The same 145mm, 0.9 oz, 11mm body, the same bolt-on clip and the same refills, in a standard anodized finish for $54. Who it's for: the man who wants the Grafton build and doesn't need the matte finish. Where it falls short: an anodized finish shows more shine than Super Matte.
"I keep the Grafton pen everywhere I need one — vehicle, office and briefcase. Great quality and easy to refill with a variety of ink inserts. The quality will outlast me for sure." Geoffrey S.
The Grafton Mini and Mini Twist
The Grafton Mini Pen is the lightest Grafton at 125mm and 0.8 oz, with a click. The Grafton Mini Twist Pen is 130mm and 1 oz and deploys with a twist instead of a click. Same aluminum, same 11mm diameter, same guarantee, $54 each. The Mini Twist's clip sits flush with the body, and its twist means no button to press by accident in a pocket. Who they're for: a jeans pocket, a notebook loop, or a smaller hand. Where they fall short: neither takes a Pilot G2. The Mini uses its own Mini Click Metal Gels, Fisher Space Pen or Rite in the Rain; the Mini Twist takes Parker, Fisher Space Pen, Monteverde and our Metal Gels. If G2 is your ink, buy the full size.

What makes a pen last
The body. A machined metal body, like the 6061-T6 aluminum used in aircraft, holds its shape in a pocket, a bag or a glovebox.
The clip. A clip secured with screws can be tightened or replaced. A molded or snapped-on clip can't.
The refill. A pen only lasts as long as you can buy ink for it. Pick one that takes a refill sold everywhere. Grafton owners put it simply: "Being able to add my favorite G2 ink to the pen is a game changer."
Weight and balance. A pen you like holding is a pen you keep. It's what Grafton owners mention most: "The pen practically floats across the page."
Who stands behind it. Durability is a promise. Ours has no expiry and no fine print.
If your Grafton ever fails, we fix it or replace it. No expiry. No registration. No fine print.
"In these days of throwaway consumerism, it's nice to be able to purchase a product that is made to last." Grafton owner
Frequently asked questions
What is the most durable pen for everyday carry?
Look for a machined metal body, a clip that is screwed on rather than molded, and a refill you can always replace. The Super Matte Grafton Pen ($64) is machined from 6061-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum, its clip is secured by two hex-head screws, and it takes Pilot G2 and other common refills. If it ever fails, we fix it or replace it.
What refills does the Grafton pen take?
The full-size Grafton takes Pilot G2 (full-size, native), Parker Gel, Parker Ballpoint, Fisher Space Pen, Monteverde Ballpoint, and Everyman Metal Gels in 0.5mm and 0.7mm, and ships with a 0.7mm black Metal Gel. Pilot G2 does not fit the Grafton Mini or the Mini Twist; check each Mini's refill list before ordering ink.
How much does the Grafton weigh?
The full-size Grafton is 0.9 oz (26 g) and 145mm long. The Grafton Mini is 0.8 oz and 125mm, and the Grafton Mini Twist is 1 oz and 130mm. All three are 11mm in diameter.
What is the Grafton made of?
The full-size Grafton is machined from 6061-T6 aerospace-grade anodized aluminum, with a deep machined groove grip and a heavy-duty clip secured by two hex-head screws. The Mini and Mini Twist use the same aluminum and the same 11mm diameter.
What happens if my Grafton breaks?
No expiry. No registration. No fine print. If it ever fails, tell us and we'll fix it or replace it, for as long as you own it. Write to info@everyman.co.
What is the difference between the Super Matte and the Original Grafton?
The finish and the price. The Super Matte Grafton Pen ($64) has a velvety, non-reflective Super Matte finish in six colors: New Oxblood, OD Green, Black, Midnight, Amber and Military. The Original Grafton Pen ($54) has a standard anodized finish. Size, weight, refills and guarantee are the same.
Does the Grafton work if I fly often or live somewhere dry?
Yes, with the right refill. The Metal Gel it ships with is water-based and doesn't like sitting in a dry drawer for a year. If you fly often, work outdoors, or live somewhere arid, add a 1.0mm Ballpoint and swap it in. It takes ten seconds and no tools.
