The most comfortable pen for writing all day
Written by the team at Everyman. We make the pen we recommend here, so weigh our pick with that in mind. We tell you where it falls short, too.
The short answer
If you write for an hour or more at a time, get a pen that's about 11 mm across, has a little weight, gives your fingers something to hold, and uses gel ink so you don't have to press. Our pick is the Original Grafton, $54. It's 145 mm long and 0.9 oz, with a deep machined groove grip and a 0.7 mm gel refill. Rated 4.8 from 922 reviews.
- Want a softer, non-shiny feel: Super Matte Grafton, $64. Same pen, velvety finish.
- Want real weight in your hand: Brass Grafton Mini Twist, $84. 1.8 oz of solid brass.
- Want a cushioned rubber grip: the Grafton isn't that pen. More on that below.
Every Grafton carries the same promise: if it ever fails, we fix it or replace it.

Shop the Original Grafton Super Matte, $64What makes a pen comfortable to write with
Most hand fatigue comes from squeezing, not from the writing itself. A pen that's too thin, too slick or too light makes you grip harder to control it, and a ballpoint that needs pressure makes you push. Do that for an hour and your hand tells you about it.
Diameter. A very thin barrel makes most people pinch. A wider one lets your fingers relax around it. Every Grafton is 11 mm across.
Weight and balance. A pen with some weight settles into your hand and moves across the page with less effort. Too much and your wrist feels it by the end of a long page. When Grafton owners talk about how it feels, they rarely say heavy. They say balanced.
Grip. Your fingers need somewhere to sit that doesn't slide when your hand warms up. Rubber does that by being soft. The Grafton does it with deep machined grooves cut into the metal.
Ink. Gel needs less pressure than ballpoint. Less pressure means a looser grip, and a looser grip is most of the battle.
The Grafton line, measured for long writing
All five Graftons share the 11 mm diameter and the grooved grip. What changes is length, weight and which refills fit, and those decide how a pen feels on page three.

Original Grafton: the one for writing all day
Pick it up and your fingers land in the grooves without looking for them. The barrel is 11 mm across, so you aren't pinching, and at 145 mm the back of the pen rests against your hand instead of floating above it. That's the balance owners keep writing to us about.
At 0.9 oz it has enough weight to carry itself across the page, and it ships with our 0.7 mm black gel refill, which writes without pressure. If you already have an ink you love, it takes Pilot G2, Parker Gel, Parker Ballpoint, Fisher Space Pen and Monteverde as well.
Who it's for: teachers grading a stack, officers writing reports, anyone who fills a notebook. Two owners below put it better than we can.
"There is zero cramping or fatigue."Grafton owner
"After work, my hand would be so tired and painful at the end of the day, but not now."Grafton owner
"This pen is amazing. Very durable, great ink, and comfortable in the hand. Also looks super cool."Jeffrey C., Grafton owner
"Solid premium feel without being too heavy."Grafton owner
Where it falls short. It's metal, so it's heavier than a plastic stick pen, and some people need a few days to get used to that. There's no cushioned rubber anywhere on it. If soft is what your hand wants, the Grafton isn't it. And the gel refill is water-based, so it doesn't like a year in a dry drawer. If you fly a lot or live somewhere arid, add a 1.0 mm ballpoint refill and swap it in. It takes ten seconds and no tools.
Super Matte Grafton: same pen, softer to the touch
Everything above holds: 145 mm, 11 mm, 0.9 oz, the same grooves and the same refills, G2 included. The difference is the surface. Super Matte is a velvety, non-reflective finish over the aluminum, and it changes how the pen feels under your fingers more than you'd expect.
It comes in six colors we only make this way: New Oxblood, OD Green, Black, Midnight, Amber and Military.
"This pen has quickly become an indispensable part of my daily carry. It's robust enough for the demands of military work, incredibly reliable, and a pleasure to use."Todd K., Super Matte owner
"I love everything about these pens. The color is great, the quality of the instruments is great and the customer service is, you guessed it, great. I write with one of my 5 Graftons everyday."Tim H., Super Matte owner
Where it falls short. You pay $10 more for the finish, and it writes exactly like the Original. Its page has 12 reviews so far, all five stars, which is less to go on than 922.
Brass Grafton Mini Twist: for people who want weight
Some writers want the pen to feel substantial, and 0.9 oz isn't enough for them. The Brass Mini Twist is solid brushed brass at 1.8 oz, twice the Original, with the same 11 mm grooved grip. You twist it to write, so there's no click.
"Fantastic weight and feel. It has heft which helps make writing a breeze. The look of the brass is classic." Jake B., Brass Grafton owner
Where it falls short. Weight cuts both ways. If you like a light pen, 1.8 oz will feel like a lot by the end of a long page. It's 130 mm, shorter than the Original, and it doesn't take Pilot G2. At $84 it's the most expensive Grafton here.
Grafton Mini and Mini Twist: great pens, wrong job
Both keep the 11 mm grip, so they feel right in your fingers. They're built for a pocket: the Mini is 125 mm and 0.8 oz with a click, the Mini Twist is 130 mm and 1 oz with a twist. For a signature, a list or a page of meeting notes they're excellent. For two hours of writing, the shorter body sits further forward in your hand and you'll notice. Neither takes Pilot G2. Both are $54.
How to choose, if you write for a living
How long are your sessions? Under ten minutes at a time, almost any good pen will do. An hour or more, go full length: the Original or the Super Matte.
Do you press hard? Most people who cramp do. Use gel, not ballpoint, and let the pen's weight do the work. If you catch yourself white-knuckling a thin pen, a wider barrel is the fix.
Light or heavy? Mini 0.8 oz, Original 0.9, Mini Twist 1, Brass 1.8. If you've never written with a metal pen, start at 0.9.
Do you already have an ink you trust? If it's Pilot G2, choose the Original or Super Matte. They're the only Graftons it fits.
One for the desk, one for the pocket? Plenty of owners end up there. Put any two Graftons in your cart and 15% comes off at checkout, applied automatically.
If your Grafton ever fails, we fix it or replace it. No expiry, no registration, for as long as you own it.
Orders placed before 2pm EST ship the same business day. US shipping is free on orders of $75 or more. Questions about refills or which Grafton fits your hand go to real people at info@everyman.co, Monday to Friday.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most comfortable pen for writing all day?
For most people, a pen around 11 mm across with some weight to it, a grip your fingers don't slide on, and a gel refill that writes without pressure. Our pick is the Original Grafton at $54: 145 mm long, 11 mm in diameter, 0.9 oz, with a deep machined groove grip and a 0.7 mm gel refill. It is rated 4.8 from 922 reviews.
Is a heavier pen easier to write with?
Up to a point. A pen with some weight rests in your hand and needs less pressure to move across the page. Too much weight tires your hand over a long session. Balance matters as much as the number: the aluminum Original Grafton weighs 0.9 oz, and the solid brass Grafton Mini Twist weighs 1.8 oz for people who want more heft.
Is gel or ballpoint ink easier on your hand?
Gel ink usually needs less pressure than ballpoint, which is why most people find it easier over a long session. Every Grafton ships with a 0.7 mm black gel refill. Gel is water-based and doesn't like a year in a dry drawer, so if you fly often, work outdoors or live somewhere arid, Everyman also sells a 1.0 mm ballpoint refill.
What pen diameter is most comfortable?
It depends on your hand, but very thin barrels make most people pinch harder, and that is where the cramping starts. Every Grafton pen is 11 mm in diameter, with a deep machined groove where your fingers sit.
Does the Grafton take Pilot G2 refills?
The full-size pens do: the Original Grafton and the Super Matte Grafton take Pilot G2, Parker Gel, Parker Ballpoint, Fisher Space Pen, Monteverde and Everyman Metal Gels in 0.5 mm and 0.7 mm. The Grafton Mini, the Grafton Mini Twist and the Brass Grafton Mini Twist do not take Pilot G2.
What happens if my Grafton breaks?
If your Grafton ever fails, tell us and we will fix it or replace it, for as long as you own it. There is no expiry and no registration. Write to info@everyman.co, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm EST.
